We work hard at the BLP to meet and exceed all applicable state and federal environmental standards that govern the production and distribution of electricity. At our J.B. Sims Generating Station Unit III, nearly $27 million of emission control equipment helps to protect West Michigan’s environment. In April of 2004, we spent an additional $3.5 million to upgrade environmental equipment at the J.B. Sims Generating Station Unit III. The new equipment, including new burners and dynamic classifiers, further reduced the power plant's emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOx). The new burners eliminated hot spots in the power plant's seven-story furnace, where high temperatures contribute to the creation of NOx, a component of smog.
