As a community-owned utility, we provide not-for-profit electric rates to our customers. When our customers pay their electric bills, they make an investment in the Grand Haven community. We don't have out-of-town stockholders earning a profit on the electricity our customers use. Instead, the BLP contributes nearly $1,000,000 annually to our community. This benefits our local economy.
The Grand Haven BLP currently owns and operates two electric generating facilities, six substations, and approximately 220 miles of electric distribution lines. We employ 62 people in a variety of utility jobs.
The BLP is a member of the Michigan Public Power Agency's Power Pool Project. Through this utility power pool, we are able to purchase the most economic power available at any given time, and deliver it to our customers. Cost savings are passed directly to our customers. Through the power pool, we are also able to sell any excess electricity we generate. This provides an important revenue source that helps keep our rates competitive. |
